Liverpool stop contract talks with Keita

Must Read

Liverpool have a number of players out of contract at the end of the season and now a new update has emerged on one particular player’s future ahead of his last six months at Anfield.

What’s the latest?

According to Football Insider, Liverpool have stopped contract talks with Naby Keita and are now willing to part ways with the player in the summer of 2023.

As per the report, the club had initially wanted to keep hold of the midfielder with the intention to extend his stay at Anfield, however, it is now claimed that Liverpool have made a huge U-turn on their negotiations.

The Reds are still not keen on losing Keita on a free transfer in the summer despite the fact that the player will be able to sign a pre-contract agreement with foreign clubs in January.

Klopp can finally ditch Keita

Whether Liverpool sell Keita in the January transfer window or lose him for nothing it is without a doubt the right decision for the club to part ways with the midfielder who has been plagued with injuries throughout his time at the club.

The £130k-per-week ace – who was dubbed a “liability” by writer Zubin Daver – has had 18 incidents of injury and illness amounting to 436 days in recovery and 85 games missed in total, which has been a contributing factor to Liverpool’s struggles in rotating their midfield.

The Merseysiders paid £52.75m back in 2018 which was a club record-breaking transfer at the time, so it is safe to say that due to his unavailability and the transfer fee involved for Keita that it has been one of the biggest transfer disasters Liverpool have made in recent years.

Despite the 27-year-old’s poor injury record, remarkably there has been interest from clubs across Europe who would be keen on taking Keita from Liverpool either in January or when he becomes a free agent.

The Guinea international has reportedly attracted interest from Chelsea, Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur, with Fabrizio Romano revealing last month that 3 or 4 clubs are monitoring the player’s situation at Liverpool:

“Borussia Dortmund are among 3-4 clubs around Europe interested in Naby Keita in case he becomes a free agent,” he said.

With that being said, the powers at Anfield must find a way to sell Keita in the upcoming transfer window if they are to have any hope of recouping some of the money wasted on the midfielder.
