What do you get when you cross Terraria, Hotline Miami, Shovel Knight, and a bunch of other cool indie games? Probably a mess, but they’re all in the latest Dead Cells update, along with characters and weapons from a selection of other indie classics. Everyone is Here Vol. II is out now, and as the name suggests, it’s the second Dead Cells update that introduces a cool slate of indie crossover content.
Let’s run through each of the new additions in this Dead Cells update, because each one is a clever homage to a beloved indie game. From Terraria, there’s a new ‘Guide’ skin and the pink sword Starfury, which causes star fragments to fall from the sky when you strike enemies with it.
From Shovel Knight, there’s the King Scepter, which allows you to launch into the air into a spin after a shoulder charge, bouncing on enemies from above. When you successfully bounce, you can charge again, so it’s possible to chain the move for quite a while – although the devs have made it a tricky thing to master.
Jacket, from Hotline Miami, has arrived with three of the frightful animal masks and signature baseball bat, which crits on stunned enemies – hit ’em while they’re down, in other words.
Everyone’s Here Vol. II also adds the hero from Katana Zero, along with the ability to throw objects. You can chuck stuff at enemies to stun them, then rush in to kill with a dash attack.
One of the most mechanically interesting additions is Slay the Spire. In Dead Cells, each of the card game’s four classes is transformed into a complex skill, and you’ll start out with one passive power for a specific class. You can keep that active for as long as you like, or use it for a powerful one-off effect – at which point you’ll ‘draw’ a new passive.
Finally there’s the Commando and laser glaive from Risk of Rain. You can hurl the glaive at enemies like a boomerang, and it’ll bounce around the level geometry gaining damage each time it strikes an enemy.
You can unlock the new content by solving the riddles found in the book of clues in the Prisoner’s Quarters. You’ll also want to be on the lookout for new lore rooms that have spawned around the island.
